83rd Academy Awards Nominations Announced

Beverly Hills, CA (January 25, 2011) – Nominations for the 83rd Academy Awards were announced today (Tuesday, January 25) by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Tom Sherak and 2009 Oscar® winner Mo'Nique.

Sherak and Mo'Nique, who won an Academy Award® for her supporting performance in "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire," announced the nominees in 10 of the 24 Award categories at a 5:38 a.m. PT live news conference attended by more than 400 international media representatives. Lists of nominations in all categories were then distributed to the media in attendance and online via the official Academy Awards website, http://www.oscar.com/.

Academy members from each of the branches vote to determine the nominees in their respective categories – actors nominate actors, film editors nominate film editors, etc. In the Animated Feature Film and Foreign Language Film categories, nominations are selected by vote of multi-branch screening committees. All voting members are eligible to select the Best Picture nominees.

Nominations ballots were mailed to the 5,755 voting members in late December and were returned directly to PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), the international accounting firm, for tabulation.

Official screenings of all motion pictures with one or more nominations will begin for members this weekend at the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater. Screenings also will be held at the Academy's Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood and in London, New York and the San Francisco Bay Area.
All active and life members of the Academy are eligible to select the winners in all categories, although in five of them – Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject and Foreign Language Film – members can vote only if they have seen all of the nominated films in those categories.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2010 will be presented on Sunday, February 27, 2011, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live by the ABC Television Network beginning at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 200 countries worldwide.

Backstage Beauty: Pretty, Wearable Makeup at the Missoni Spring 2011 Show

"A gorgeous, natural, sexy girl": That's how makeup artist Lucia Pieroni described the makeup at the Missoni show yesterday in Milan. And we couldn't agree more: The softly smoky eyes looked sensual, but not over-the-top, since the darkness was contained around the lash lines. For anyone who has yet to master smoky eyes, try this easy method Pieroni used backstage at the show:

1) Draw black eyeliner all around the eyes, then along the inner rim of the lower lash lines, and blend it out. 2) Apply a gray-brown powder shadow (Pieroni used M.A.C. Smut shadow at Missoni) on top of the liner, and smudge.3) Curl your lashes—and you're good to go.
Pieroni paired the sultry eyes with gentle bronzer on the cheeks, highlighter on the cheekbones, and nude lipstick (after dabbing concealer on the mouth to cancel out any redness, she patted on a peachy-nude lipstick, M.A.C. in Freckletone, with her fingers). And a quick hair note: Like the hair at Dolce & Gabbana, Marni, and Proenza Schouler, the Missoni hairstyle was supposed to look like it was coming undone. "It’s like the girls have been in the desert, like the winds have been going at her—the hair looks like it’s been done by nature," said hairstylist Eugene Souleiman. "We don't want the hair to look like it's done in a salon." Mission accomplished.

Turn It On: Katie HolmesWho is known for being a chic fashion obsessive, marrying one of the world’s most powerful men

On working hard to perfect her role as former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy: “I worked as hard as I could, because I loved her. On set there was this feeling that we had to create something very special, because these people were very special.” On playing such a complex role: “[The Kennedys] were like movie stars. There was such a professionalism to their public image.”

Hair and Makeup Secrets of Tron: LegacyThe beauty brains behind the movie reveal why its sci-fi looks are off the grid!

Crafting Gem’s coif proved to be quite an undertaking, according to Bemben. “We bought 29-inch-long hair extensions—which are difficult to find on the market—and bleached them white,” she says. “Then we created a wig with a lace piece across the front to secure it onto Beau’s forehead.” Between making sure the lace strip didn’t ripple after being glued on, working with Da Silva to cover up telltale fabric, and styling the cascading wig accordingly, Bemben says the daily process took well over an hour: “It was a very extreme situation, but it worked out amazingly, and I’m proud of the results—you can’t tell that Gem is in a wig, which is kind of cool.”“I wanted the Sirens to have doll-like eyes,” says Da Silva, who complemented actresses’ blue contact lenses with a bold burst of fringe. For eyeliner, Da Silva layered M.A.C Eye Pencil in Ebony over M.A.C Fluidline in Blacktrack. To set and add depth, she patted M.A.C Eye Shadow in Carbon and Ben Nye Lumière Grand Colour in Starry Night over the top. For standout lashes, Da Silva applied three sets of false lashes to the upper eyelid and one set along the lower lash line.

The combination of darkened brows and sleek buns looked strong and bold—just like the clothes in Donatella Versace's latest collection.

They're ultra-beautiful girls," makeup artist Pat McGrath told us backstage about the look. "We wanted them to look perfect and grown up."
McGrath said there was "lots of perfecting" when it came to the skin, which meant foundation applied all over, concealer where necessary, and highlighter on the brow bones, cupid's bow, between the eyebrows, at the inner corners of the eyes, and on the cheekbones.

The eyebrows were the main focus of the look. "We're doing lots of grooming and tweezing and perfecting," McGrath said. That meant combing them with spooly wands and stiff toothbrush-like brushes, plucking stray hairs, and filling them in with powders and pencil.

For the rest of the makeup, McGrath contoured the eyes with a taupe powder shadow, swiped brown mascara on the top lashes, and lined the inner rims of the eyes with a beige liner. She applied blush at the apples of the cheeks, the temples, and the chin, and simply patted balm on the lips.

Models came down the runway with soft and romantic hair and makeup—complimenting the design duo's unbelievably sexy, lace-filled collection.

The makeup is very sensual, soft, and sexy—very Dolce & Gabbana," makeup artist Pat McGrath told us backstage. "Every season we work very closely with the designers, looking at the collection and going to all the fittings. There's always a story, and for this season the story was a girl who goes to get married and then runs away.

McGrath applied foundation with a brush to create a perfect finish, making sure to match the models' faces to their bodies. And, under the eyes, she dabbed on a new product from Dolce & Gabbana —Perfect Finish Concealer. "It's coming out soon, and it's amazing," McGrath said.

"I worked with each model's individual texture so everyone has her own style," Souleiman explained, "But the preparation was the same for each." He started by working in "loads of mousse," giving the hair a "tactile feeling," with lots of volume and texture. After blow-drying with a round brush, he then massaged the top of the head with his hands to muss up the hair a bit. "It has to look like it's been loved," he said.

Glimmery eyes, flushed cheeks, and sleek hair translate perfectly from the runway to real life (with one simple tweak).

"We wanted a young, fresh flush on the cheeks," explained Willer, who lightly dipped a blush brush into a soft pink mineral powder blush and dusted in on the apples of the cheeks only.

Metallic eyes and '30s-inspired hair complemented Miuccia Prada's bold spring collection.

The main focus of the look was the eyes. "[Miuccia Prada] kept saying, 'I want something really bold and reflective,'" McGrath said. She dusted a theatrical silver powder all over the lids—starting at the innermost corners and ending at the bottom of the brows at the outside corner—until they looked like they'd been coated with molten metal

Shining like a string of classic Chanel pearls—the hair and makeup was luminous, with iridescent smoky eyes and a simple, sleek ponytail.

Every model had a thin black line drawn in their part, courtesy of Chanel's L'Écriture de Chanel liquid eyeliner. "Karl came up with the idea. He wanted one graphic thing and asked what would happen if we painted on a line," Philips said. "The effect is almost disturbing—it adds a bit of weirdness to an otherwise classic look."

Mix Betty Page hair with vivid makeup shades, and you've got the makings of Dior's fun, color-drenched show.

"Every model's eyelids are a different color," McGrath said. "John [Galliano] picked which girls would wear which color on the eyes." The colors he chose from—blue, fuchsia, orange, lime green, purple, and red—were all vivid.

Sleek hair and bright orange-red lips added punch to Frida Giannini's colorful collection

Just as the lips got a last-minute glazing, so did the hair: "The biggest element of the look is shine," Murenu explained, so the hairstylists applied several different serums and sprays (including John Frieda Frizz-Ease Hair Serum) just before show time.

New Year's Beauty Resolutions: Here's to a Pretty 2011!

New Year's Beauty Resolutions: Here's to a Pretty 2011!:allure.com

Hitting the gym a little harder (or showing up at all) and making time to read more books are resolutions that make it on my list most years. But this time, my colleagues and I have decided to incorporate some beauty resolutions, too: Mine is to wean off some of my beauty addictions—lash extensions and spray tans are great for special events, but they've become part of my everyday look. I'm going to work on embracing my natural lashes and skin tone—until my next big party, anyway.

"I want to get at least one manicure a month; They're boring to sit through and I never have the patience. But when I see women with their nails done, I immediately view them as put together. I like to use a light shade on my hands, so when my nails chip it's not as noticeable."—beauty editor Angelique Serrano

"I want to bust out of my hair rut. Normally I just let my hair air dry, but next year I resolve to pull out my blow-dryer and take the time to really style it. Who knows, maybe I'll even pick up a curling iron!"—associate editor Elizabeth Siegel

"I'm starting an anti-aging regimen. I'm 24, so I don't do much with my skin right now, but I know that's going to catch up to me in the long run. I'm going to be more diligent with antioxidants this year so I can prevent fine lines."—assistant editor Kayleigh Donahue

What's your beauty resolution for 2011? More importantly, will you keep it?

10 New Sexy (and Speedy) Makeup Looks

10 New Sexy (and Speedy) Makeup Looks: allure.com

Sexing up your look takes more than a red lip stain and tousled hair (but that's a good place to start). It also takes restraint, grace, and the ineffable ability to make it look like you didn't fuss for hours over every last detail. In that spirit, we offer you our favorite sexy new looks that actually only take about 30 seconds to create.

Orange-Red Lips
Every woman is a mere two lipstick swipes away from sexpot. The key is getting the shade right—too red spells harlot, too orange is plain ugs. Try mixing shades, like makeup artists did to create the perfect shade at the spring 2010 Prada show: a little bit of Make Up For Ever Lacquered Lipstick in Fluorescent Orange blended with Laura Mercier Crème Lip Colour in Truly Red. (Or M.A.C. Lipstick in Lady Danger will get you there in a single swipe.)

Make Over Your Makeup Bag: The Beauty Looks to Love and Leave Behind in 2011

Make Over Your Makeup Bag: The Beauty Looks to Love and Leave Behind in 2011: allure.com
In 2010, we painted our nails greige and even tried brown lipstick—but with the new year comes new makeup trends. Get ready to get excited for 2011's fresh beauty ideas.
LOVE: Vampier lip shades.
Sheer gloss and tinted lip balm may be fine for Sunday brunch, but otherwise it's time to step it up with darker, sexier lip colors in wines and blackened burgundies, like those on the Yves Saint Laurent, Louis Vuitton, and Givenchy spring runways. "Rich, deep lips are sophisticated and romantic," says makeup artist Quinn Murphy, who's worked with Anne Hathaway and America Ferrera. "Berry, burgundy, and plum are in the same color family as natural lip colors but with an added oomph," he explains, so they're great if you're nervous about playing with intense shades. We like Tom Ford Lip Color in Bruised Plum
